The Village of Pinehurst

Village of Pinehurst

In 1895 Boston philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,000 acres of land, and, with his vision of creating a New England style village with a moderate climate, Pinehurst was born.

To design his village, Tufts hired Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park in New York City .

By the first year, Tufts had directed the completion of more than 20 cottages and the Holly Inn. The Carolina Hotel was constructed at the turn of the century and opened in 1901.

In 1901 Tufts hired Donald J. Ross, a young Scottish  golf professional, to direct golf operations at Pinehurst. Ross remained with Pinehurst until his death in 1948.

Today Pinehurst, NC is a top resort community with over 43 of the finest golf courses and an incomparable lifestyle!
